Our history
In September 200, Flemming and Mundie created the Banana hill company to provide a platform for working together on projects related to their interests in development and agriculture. It was not only envisioned as a commercial enterprise but also as a platform for contributing to rural development in third world countries.
The name Banana hill is a tribute to the sprawling Banana hill area outside Nairobi in Kenya where we have lived. Some describe it as an area of despair and crime. However, it is also a melting pot with a constant influx of people moving from the countryside to the city. Creativity and entrepreneurship abound. As do the beautiful undulating landscapes dominated by tea farms and small towns.
In 2002, we decided that we would be in a better position if we pulled in more diverse expertise and interests into the team. Different people have joined the team, but presently there are three core members, based in Mozambique and the UK.
The company remains based in Holland, and Irene Guijt is our contact person there. Irene is well known for her impressive range of work in Participatory Monitoring and Evaluation, and has her own company, Learning by Design. A few members of Banana hill have worked with her before and we very much value her becoming closely linked to the company. Irene can also be contacted directly by e-mail at iguijt@learningbydesign.org.
